Lesson 17: Parameters and Graphs

In preparation for the associated Algebra 1 lesson, this lesson is focused on generating and practicing informal language used to describe transformations of a graph. Students have opportunities to describe changes to a graph in a way that makes sense for them, and opportunities to make their language . more precise (MP6). This will enable students to have this language at the ready. They also spend more time drawing connections between transformed graphs and their equations.

Lesson overview

  • 17.1 Warm-up: Which One Doesn’t Belong: Triangles (10 minutes)
  • 17.2 Activity: Describe the Change (20 minutes)
  • 17.3 Activity: Select a Function (10 minutes)

Learning goals:

  • Analyze how a change in each parameter of the function changes the graph.
  • Graph quadratic functions given in vertex form.
