Big Ideas: Multiplying or dividing a number by ten can affect the value of a number. This lesson builds on students' previous work in understanding the base ten system. In this task, students will explore how the value of a digit changes by powers of 10 as it moves from left to right in multi-digit numbers. Students will further develop understanding of multiplication and division by powers of ten as they create equations to represent the value of digits in numbers. This understanding builds a foundation for students' future work in multiplying and dividing, and in the development of decimal number concepts. Vocabulary: place value, powers of ten, equation, digits, numbers, numerals Special Materials: Place Value Chart base ten disks (optional)
