The mathematical purpose of this lesson is to determine the independence of events and calculate conditional probabilities using data collected in class. The work of this lesson connects to previous work because students found and used probabilities to recognize dependent and independent events. The work of this lesson connects to upcoming work because students will make inferences and justify conclusions. When students explain and justify how they determined probabilities, and ask each other questions they are constructing viable arguments and critiquing the reasoning of others (MP3).
