Lesson objective: Find relative frequencies for a two-way table.

This lesson helps to build procedural skill with relative frequencies. A two-way table is used here because it supports finding relative frequencies for bivariate categorical data. This work develops students' understanding that examining frequencies in two-way tables and other displays of categorical data gives information about associations.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 5 (Use appropriate tools strategically) as they analyze a two-way table about the age of students and their bedtimes.

Key vocabulary:

  • bivariate categorical data
  • conditional frequency
  • marginal frequency
  • percent
  • relative frequency
  • two-way table
