Lesson objective: Compare fractions and decimals on a number line.

This lesson helps to build procedural skill with comparing both fractions and decimals. Number lines are used here because they provide a mental and visual strategy to show less than, greater than, and equal to. This work develops students' understanding that we can use place value understanding to compare decimals and fractions that refer to the same whole.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 4 (Model with mathematics) as they use number lines to compare fractions and decimals under different situational practice problems.

Key vocabulary:

  • decimal
  • denominator
  • model
  • number line
  • numerator
  • representation

Special materials needed:
