Lesson objective: Partition shapes into halves.

This lesson helps to build fluency with partitioning shapes into halves. Basic shapes are used here because they help support student understanding of fractional models in the future. This work develops students' understanding that shapes, like rectangles, can be partitioned into two smaller equal shares that we call halves, and that one whole shape is two of the smaller equal shares together.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 3 (Construct viable arguments) as they construct arguments about their own partitioning, but also distinguish correct reasoning from that which is flawed.

Key vocabulary:

• Equal share
• Half/Halves
• Partition
