Lesson objective: Build composite shapes by putting other shapes together.

This lesson helps to build fluency with composite shapes. Basic shapes (in the form of pattern blocks or shape cut-outs) are used here to support student reasoning of how composite shapes are made from other shapes. This work develops students' understanding that we can use basic shapes to build composite shapes and models.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 4 (model with mathematics) as they use pattern blocks and shape cut-outs to model their reasoning of how composite shapes are made.

Key vocabulary:

  • 2-dimensional
  • basic shapes
  • composite shapes

Special materials needed:

  • pattern blocks
  • shape cut-outs
  • tangrams
