Lesson objective: Sort shapes by defining and non-defining attributes.
This lesson helps to build fluency with sorting shapes. Basic shapes are used here to highlight the similarities and differences between different shapes and their defining, and non-defining attributes. This work develops students' understanding that shapes have attributes that are both defining, like number of sides, and non-defining, like size.
Students engage in Mathematical Practice 2 (reason abstractly and quantitatively) as they make sense of the relationships between defining and non-defining attributes of shapes.
Key vocabulary:
- defining attributes
- non-defining attributes
