Big Idea: All normal distribution curves are similarly shaped and have common properties; as a result, data sets with an approximately normal distribution can be modeled using the mean and standard deviation. This lesson builds on students’ knowledge of normal distribution curves including: appropriate use, shape, spread, mean and standard deviation. Students will use their knowledge to discover the empirical rule and use it to model a data set with normal distribution. The concepts in this lesson build towards students’ future work predicting intervals and population percentages by applying the empirical rule. Vocabulary: standard deviation, mean, proportion Special Materials: Colored pencils
