Lesson objective: Understand that relationships exist between corresponding terms in patterns.

Students bring prior knowledge of creating patterns according to a rule, and finding features of the pattern that are not explicit in the rule itself from 4.OA.C.5. This prior knowledge is extended to include generating two numerical patterns as students use two given rules to generate two numerical patterns and identify relationships between corresponding terms. A conceptual challenge students may encounter is looking for the relationship between the two corresponding terms in addition to finding the the two individual patterns for the two different, given rules. 

The concept is developed through work with tables, which allow students to more easily organize and analyze the information provided in the problem to determine the patterns and relationships. 

This work helps students deepen their understanding of operations because operations used to generate patterns help us identify the relationship between two different number patterns.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 2 (reason abstractly and quantitatively) as they as they create a table for two patterns, and identify the relationship between corresponding terms.
