Lesson objective: Apply addition and subtraction skills to create word problems.

This lesson provides an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and understanding of adding and subtraction two-digit numbers to a mathematical situation. Students are asked to create their own addition and subtraction word problems and write an answer key.

Key Concept students will use:

  • The strategy you use to add or subtract does not change the total or difference.

Skills students will use:

  • Adding and subtracting within 100 (Grade 2, Unit 1)
  • Applying strategies to add and subtract within 1000  (Grade 2, Unit 11)

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 1 (Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them) as they use their understanding of addition and subtraction to create their own word problems and solve them.

Key vocabulary:

  • addition
  • difference
  • subtraction
  • sum
