Lesson objective: Describe rotations and reflections.

This lesson helps to build fluency with describing rotations and reflections. Rotations and reflections are used here because they give students an opportunity to work with clockwise and counterclockwise rotations as well as horizontal and vertical reflections. This work develops students' understanding that features of shapes remain congruent when shapes undergo a rigid transformation.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 6 (Attend to Precision) as they move from simply stating that a transformation is a reflection or a rotation to describing the specifics of the movement.

Key vocabulary:

  • angle
  • clockwise
  • counterclockwise
  • degrees
  • horizontal
  • reflections
  • rotations
  • translations
  • vertical
