Big Ideas: Geometric attributes (such as sides and angles) give descriptive information about a shape’s properties and orientation, which supports visualization and problem solving. In this lesson, students will learn to identify a cube by its geometric name and attributes. Students recognize that a cube is composed of 6 square faces, 12 edges, and 8 vertices. This lesson builds on a student's prior knowledge of definite geometric attributes of 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional shapes. In this task students solve a cube puzzle. Students must figure out how to place designed faces of a cube onto its 2-dimensional unfolded net. Students must use their new knowledge of edges to critically think about the placement of each face. This lesson sets the foundation for recognizing the relationship between all 2D and 3D shapes.
