Lesson objective: Practice measuring objects to compare a single attribute regardless of the object’s position.

This lesson helps to build fluency with measuring objects with precision. A linking cube ruler is used here because it supports student learning by gaining familiarity with nonstandard measurement tools. This work develops students' understanding that an object’s length remains the same regardless of its position relative to another object.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 5 (Use appropriate tools strategically) as they practice measuring objects in various positions.

Key vocabulary:

  • precision
  • position
  • same

Special materials needed:

  • linking cube ruler (or similar)
