Lesson objective: Apply properties of operations to expressions with negative rational numbers.

This lesson provides an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and understanding of properties of operations to a mathematical situation. Students are asked to complete expressions to represent a specific value that is a negative mixed number.

Key Concept students will use:

  • We can use equivalent forms of rational numbers and the relationships between operations to solve problems.

Skills students will use:

  • Apply operations to rational numbers (Grade 7, Units 4 and 5)
  • Understanding equivalence of expressions (Grade 6, Unit 8)
  • Decomposing rational numbers (Grade 4, Unit 5)

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 7 (Look for and make use of structure) as they consider the structure of a negative rational number and its relationship to its opposite rational number and a number line.

Key vocabulary:

  • properties of operations
  • decomposing
  • opposites
