Big Idea: Geometric attributes (such as sides and angles) give descriptive information about a shape’s properties and orientation, which supports visualization and problem solving. In this lesson, students will learn to identify and generate shapes by their geometric name. Students recognize that the number of sides and angles helps identify and classify a shape. This lesson builds on a student's prior knowledge of definite geometric attributes, such as the type of lines, number of angles, angle size, and the number of sides to recognize shapes. In this task, students use shape people -"Shaples"- in order to understand that the number of sides and angles helps geometrically name a particular shape. The different types of Shaples shown in this lesson aid students in realizing that even irregular shapes can be classified as named geometric shapes. This lesson sets the foundation for identifying more specific groups of 2 dimensional shapes, such as quadrilaterals.
