Big Idea: Geometric attributes (such as sides and angles) give descriptive information about a shape’s properties and orientation. This helps us visualize and problem-solve. In this lesson, students will learn to identify the attributes of a shape. Through discovery and discussion, students learn to use definite geometric attributes, such as the type of lines, number of angles, and number of sides to recognize shapes. This lesson builds on a student's prior knowledge of non-definite attributes (color, size, etc.) and basic shape recognition. In this task, students will use "Shape People - Shaples" to learn how to sort shapes by their given attributes. The way the "Shaples" move around the screen builds the understanding that shapes can share various attributes with one another, allowing students to discover that shapes can be alike and different. Students can then build on this foundation when identifying 2 and 3 dimensional shapes by their various attributes. Vocabulary: attribute, shape, polygon, curve, line, straight, angle, sort, classify Special Materials: Students should have access to: * Copy of Shaples * Scissors * White board and dry erase markers (optional)
