Lesson objective: Compute the five number summary, range, and interquartile range.

This lesson helps to build procedural skill with calculating measures of variability. A numeric dataset is used here because it supports calculating the five number summary. This work develops students' understanding that a measure of variability is a number that describes the variation of a dataset.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 1 (Make sense of and persevere through problems) as they calculate multiple descriptive statistical measures.

Key vocabulary:

  • five number summary
  • interquartile range
  • maximum
  • median
  • minimum
  • quartile
  • range
