Lesson objective: Understand that sums of integers can be found using distance and direction on the number line.

Students bring prior knowledge of distance and direction on the number line, including the relationship of opposites from 6.NS.C. This prior knowledge is extended to find sums of integers as students work with numbers that are a given distance from a point on the number line. A conceptual challenge students may encounter is thinking about addding as "making bigger" based on their exclusive experience with adding positive numbers. 

The concept is developed through work with a number line, which connects distances of integers from 0 with the new idea of considering direction when adding.

This work helps students deepen their understanding of operations because they deepen their understanding of addition. without changing the idea of addition of joining lengths.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 7 (Look for and make use of structure) as they combine the idea of addition with the idea of the sign of numbers indicating direction on the number line.
