Lesson objective: Write decimal numbers in expanded notation, representing each digit’s value as a product of the digit itself and a decimal fraction.

This lesson helps to build procedural skill with expanded notation of a decimal number using fractions. Place value chart is used here because it visually supports the idea of the values of individual digits within a number. This work develops students' understanding that when the place value extends to thousandths, the structure does not change.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 7 (Look for and make use of structure) as they evaluate and demonstrate each digit's value through the expanded notation of a number using fractions.
