Big Ideas: Decimals are extensions of whole number place value. Whole number division strategies can be applied to decimals. When dividing by a decimal the quotient is larger than the dividend. Multiplication and Division are inverse operations. In this lesson students will engage in a task where students must divide a whole number by a decimal to decide which items to buy. Students will explore how to apply whole number division strategies to decimal division. This lesson encourages students to reason as to why the quotient is larger than the dividend. This lesson will strengthen students' understanding of decimals and decimal place value. The mathematical concepts in this lesson will continue to build students' understanding of the place value system.
