Lesson objective: Round to the nearest hundred using a number line.

This lesson helps to build procedural skill with rounding. A number line is used here because it supports understanding of the relational location of values as compared to benchmark numbers. This work develops students' understanding that rounding is based on place value.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 8 (Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning) as they find estimations of values through rounding using place value. A number line is created to quickly determine the estimation of a number based on its proximity to benchmark values.
