Lesson objective: Compare two-digit numbers using place value.

This lesson helps to build procedural skill with comparing two-digit numbers using place value. Counters are used here because it supports understanding of the quanitites that correspond to numeracy. This work develops students' understanding that place value allows us to compare two-digit numbers.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 2 (students make sense of the relationship between the numerals and the quantities) as they organize counters into groups of tens and ones and use place value to compare quantities. .

Key vocabulary:

  • compare

Special materials needed:

  • counters (e.g. linking cubes, paper clips, tiles, etc.)
