Lesson objective: Solve problems using positive and negative numbers in real life situations.

This lesson provides an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and understanding of integers to a real-life situation. Students are asked to determine player's final score in a game using a number line.

Key Concept students will use:

  • The number line can show both distance and direction; the sets of positive and negative numbers exist in opposite directions from 0.

Skills students will use:

  • A number line to help determine each players score
  • Their knowledge of integers

Students engage in Mathematical Practice #1 (make sense of problems and persevere in solving them) as they interpret information from a problem and model their thinking on a number line.

Key vocabulary:

  • Decrease
  • Increase
  • Integers
