Big Ideas: Decimals are an extension of whole number place value. Dividing by a decimal results in a larger quotient than dividend. Decimals are another way of writing fractions. In this task, students will apply their knowledge of whole number division to decimal division. They will engage in productive struggle while trying to find fair shares of a decimal quantity. This work will help build students' capacity for working with decimals. The mathematical concepts in this lesson build towards students' understanding of written division methods.
