Lesson objective: Fluently determine opposites and the meaning of zero in real life situations.

This lesson helps to build fluency with determining the opposite of integers and the meaning of zero. Number lines are used here because they highlight an integer's distance and direction from zero. This work develops students' understanding that the set of integers includes whole numbers, their opposites, and zero, and live on the number line with the other types of numbers students know.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 1 (Students make sense of problems and persevere in solving them) as they interpret the meaning of 0 using opposites in real life situations.

Key vocabulary:

  • Direction
  • Distance
  • Opposite
