Lesson objective: Solve problems using data from a line plot.

This lesson provides an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and understanding of  interpreting data to a real-life situation. Students are asked to interpret the given data and distribute it evenly.

Key Concept students will use:

  • Different ways data are organized helps us answer different types of questions.

Skills students will use:

  • Create a line plot with fractions of a unit  (Grade 4, Unit 9)
  • Solve problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions with information from line plots (Grade 4, Unit 9)
  • Solve problems involving multiplication and division of fractions

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 2 (Reason abstractly and quantitatively) as they create a line plot to see what the data look like, make predictions, and decide how to solve a real life problem.

Key vocabulary:

  • data
  • line plot
  • prediction
