Big Ideas:
Decimal place value is an extension of whole number place value.
The magnitude of the attribute to be measured and the accuracy needed determines the appropriate measurement unit.
Whole number operations strategies can be applied to decimals.
Multiplying by a decimal results in a smaller product.
The place in a number where a digit appears determines the value of that digit.
In this task, students will apply their understanding of decimal operations. They will engage in solving multi-step problems to determine their solutions. This will require them to add, subtract, and multiply decimals in a variety of ways. This lesson also requires students to convert measurements in order to decide which company will be the best. This work continues to build their understanding of decimals and computing with them.
