Lesson objective: Graph data on a line plot and solve problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of fractional data.

This lesson helps to build procedural skill with fractional measurements on a line plot. A line plot is used here because it represents the frequency of data. This work develops students' understanding that different ways data are organized helps us answer different types of questions.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 2 (Reason abstractly and quantitatively) as they interpret the data and solve problems using the data from the line plot.

Key vocabulary:

  • data
  • interval
  • line plot
  • scale
