Big Ideas: Decimals are an extension of whole numbers. They are parts of a whole. Addition and subtraction are inverse operations. A subtraction problem can be thought of as a missing addend problem. This lesson will build on students understanding of whole number subtraction and apply it to decimal numbers. Students should be able to apply the strategies they have for whole number subtraction to the numbers in the task for this lesson. In this lesson students will engage in a task where they are asked to a student decide what items to buy for a beach trip. Students will solve this problem in a variety of ways. Expect that some students may add to solve this problem. Vocabulary: subtraction, difference, algorithm, compute/computation, decimal, decimal point, tenths, hundredths Special Materials: Base Ten Blocks Grid paper White boards Dry-Erase markers Money sets
