Lesson objective: Analyze equations to determine if a number is even or odd.

This lesson helps to build fluency with recognizing if an equation results in an even or odd sum. A game format highlighting playing cards with equations is used here because it supports a variety of equation representations showing sums of even and odd whole numbers. This work develops students' understanding that we can write an equation to show that an even whole number is the sum of two equal addends.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 7 (Look for and make use of structure) as they analyze equations to determine if they result in even or odd sums.
