Lesson objective: Convert larger units to smaller units in order to compare quantities. This lesson addresses pints and quarts.

This optional lesson helps to build procedural skill with measurement conversions. You may want to do this lesson if students need additional practice converting larger units of measurement to smaller units. A function table is used here because it highlights how different units of measure can represent the same quantity. This work develops students' understanding that when solving measurement problems, it sometimes makes sense to express measurements given in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 1 (make sense of problems and persevere in solving them) as they use the context to determine which units of measure to convert quantities to in order to make comparisons.
