Lesson objective: Round numbers to different place values, depending on the quantities involved, in order to estimate solutions.

This lesson helps to build procedural skill with estimation. A number line is used here because it highlights where numbers are in relation to other numbers and midpoints. This work develops students' understanding that when rounding to estimate solutions, we make choices about which place to round to depending on units and quantities involved.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice MP.6 (attend to precision) as they explain how approximations can be quite different and affect the efficiency and accuracy of the estimate.
