Lesson objective: Understand that the set of integers includes whole numbers, their opposites, and zero.

Students bring prior knowledge of plotting points on a number line from 6.NS.C.5. This prior knowledge is extended to plotting whole numbers, their opposites, and zero as students plot points based on a number's distance and direction from zero. A conceptual challenge students may encounter is understanding that there are numbers that are located to the left of zero on the number line. 

The concept is developed through work with a number line, which allows students to visually see an integers distance and direction from zero.

This work helps students deepen their understanding of numbers because they use integers to continue to build their understanding of numbers.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 2 (Reason Abstractly and Quantitativly) as they work to plot integers, their opposites, and zero on a number line.
