Lesson objective: Apply appropriate techniques for comparing lengths and heights of objects.
This lesson provides an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and understanding of comparing lengths and heights of objects to a real-life situation. Students are asked to help a student create a height order list for his teacher for the spring concert.
Key Concept students will use: A single object may have multiple attributes that are measureable.
Skills students will use:
- Using a common base as a point to compare heights.
- Ordering: knowing the sequence of numbers (Grade K, Unit 1)
Students engage in Mathematical Practice 3 (Students will use mathematical language to justify their conclusions) as they describe their procedure for ordering height.
Key vocabulary:
- attribute
- height
- length
- longer
- shorter
- taller
Special materials needed:
- cut outs
- scissors
