Lesson objective: Practice measuring length and height using non-standard measurement tools.

Note that this lesson goes beyond the Kindergarten requirement. The expectation for Kindergarten students is that they compare objects with measurable attributes in common by describing which has "more of/less of" the attribute. In this lesson, students build on this by measuring with a non-standard measurement tool, building towards a Grade 1 requirement.

Use this lesson as an extension or small group activity for those students who are ready. Showing the procedure of measurement (with paper clips) is used here because it highlights the importance of measuring with precision. This work develops students' understanding that objects can be compared based on an attribute they share.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 5 (Use appropriate tools strategically) as they learn and practice the procedure of accurate measurement using non-standard tools.
