Lesson objective: Tell time to the hour using analog and digital clocks.

This lesson helps to build students' procedural skills with telling time to the hour. Both analog and digital clocks are used here because students must flexibly convert between these two formats. This work develops students' understanding that clocks are tools used to measure time.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 7 as they look for and make use of structure to determine the time shown on both analog and digital clocks.

Key vocabulary:

  • Analog clock
  • Digital clock
  • Colon
  • Minute hand
  • Hour hand

Special materials needed:

  • Track the Time cards (one deck for each pair of students)
