Lesson objective: Apply concepts of addition by solving problems involving addition with more than one strategy.
This lesson provides an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and understanding of additon strategies to a real-life situation. Students are asked to add jars of jelly beans in two different ways, showing both strategies.
Key Concept students will use:
- Addition can be thought of as putting together or adding on
Skills students will use:
- Understanding addition strategies
- Fluency practice with additon strategies
- More fluency practice with additon strategies
Students engage in Mathematical Practice 1 (Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them) as they show two different ways to solve a problem resulting in the same solution. Students will use number bonds, snap cubes and arithmetic racks to show different ways to add.
Key vocabulary:
- count-on
- number bond
- number partner
- total
Special materials needed:
- arithmetic rack
