Lesson objective: Decompose to find more than one set of number partners for the same total.

This lesson helps to build procedural skill with decomposition of numbers up to five. Number bonds and five frames are used here because they support structure for each number partner. This work develops students' understanding that subtraction can be understood as taking apart a total.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 2 (Reason abstractly and quantitatively) as they use numbers to quantify the parts of a total. Pennies are used to naturally sort the total into two groups. Students also engage in Mathematical Practice 8 (Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning) as they quantify these groups and reason about the number partners that result.
