Lesson objective: Apply the use of a double number line to solving problems involving percent.

This lesson provides an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and understanding of percent to a real-life situation. Students are asked to calculate the percent discount off the original price of an item, determine the original price of an item when given the discount price and determine the best deal in each situation.

Key Concept students will use: 

  • Percent shows the relationship of two numbers as the percent relates to 100.

Skills students will use:

  • Ratio relationships between two quantities (Grade 6, Unit 1; 6.RP.A.1)
  • Calculating percent of a number
  • Calculating the value related to 100%

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 2: Reason abstractly and quantitatively as they focus on the part, the whole and the percent in a given situation.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 7: Look for and make use of structure as they interpret percent as a rate per 100 and examine the relationship among values.
