Lesson objective: Use a double number line to determine percent of a given number.

Students practice determining percent of a number. Double number lines are used here because this model supports using benchmark percents to determine another percent of a number. This work develops students' understanding that percent is a special ratio comparing one number to 100.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 2: Students reason abstractly and quantitatively as they focus on the part, the whole, and the percent in a given situation.

Key vocabulary:

  • benchmark percent

Special materials needed:

  • graph paper
