Lesson objective: Analyze the attributes of a shape to assess whether they fit in a category.

This lesson helps to build fluency with recognizing attributes of a shape. Plane figures are used here because they allow for discrimination between quadrilaterals and other polygons. This work develops students' understanding that all rhombuses, rectangles and squares are examples of quadrilaterals, but not all quadrilaterals fit in those subcategories.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 7 (Look for and make use of structure) as they analyze shapes for common attributes.

Key vocabulary:

  • attributes
  • parallelogram
  • quadrilateral
  • rectangles
  • rhombus

Special materials needed:

  • game cards printed on cardstock
  • index card or other tool to measure square corners
