Lesson objective: Solve multistep problems using a variety of strategies and operations.

This lesson provides an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and understanding of multiplication and division to a real-life situation. Students are asked to help a teacher figure out the logistics for a school camping trip.

Key Concept students will use: 

  • We can use strategies based on place value, operations, and the relationship between multiplication and division.

Skills students will use:

  • Use partial quotients to solve division problems
  • Interpret remainders in a division problem
  • Choose a strategy to solve multiplication problems

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 8 (Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning) as they apply principles of place value and operations to solve real-world problems. Students can use partial quotients, an area model, or the standard alogoithm for multiplication.
