# 9. Using absolute value to find the distance between points (A)

## About this lesson

Lesson objective: Apply the ability to use absolute value to find the distance between points.

This lesson provides an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and understanding of absolute value to a mathematical situation. Students are asked to find the perimeter of a rectangle using the coordinates of its vertices and must give the coordinates of a square enscribed within the rectangle.

Key Concept students will use:

- Use absolute value to find the distance between points.

Skills students will use:

- Students will find the distance between two points with a common coordinate that are positioned in different quadrants.
- Students will find the distance between two points with a common coordinate that are positioned in the same quadrant.
- Students will give the coordinates of points when given their distance apart.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 7 (look for and make use of structure) as they apply their knowledge of coordinate pairs and absolute value to determine distances on the coordinate plane.

**Key vocabulary: **

- absolute value
- perimeter
- quadrant
- x-axis
- y-axis

**Special materials needed:**

- scrap, blank coordinate planes
