Lesson objective: Apply the ability to use absolute value to find the distance between points.

This lesson provides an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and understanding of absolute value to a mathematical situation. Students are asked to find the perimeter of a rectangle using the coordinates of its vertices and must give the coordinates of a square enscribed within the rectangle.

Key Concept students will use:

  • Use absolute value to find the distance between points.

Skills students will use:

  • Students will find the distance between two points with a common coordinate that are positioned in different quadrants.
  • Students will find the distance between two points with a common coordinate that are positioned in the same quadrant.
  • Students will give the coordinates of points when given their distance apart.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 7 (look for and make use of structure) as they apply their knowledge of coordinate pairs and absolute value to determine distances on the coordinate plane.

Key vocabulary:

  • absolute value
  • perimeter
  • quadrant
  • x-axis
  • y-axis

Special materials needed:

  • scrap, blank coordinate planes
