Lesson objective: Fluently use absolute value to find distance between points.

This lesson helps to build fluency with using absolute value to find distances between points having a common coordinate. Coordinate planes are used here because they enhance students' ability to see how absolute value is being used to find distances between points lying in the same quadrant and those across axes. This work develops students' understanding that absolute value can be used to find the distance between points in the coordinate plane that differ by one coordinate.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 7 (Look for and make use of structure) as they apply their knowledge of coordinate pairs and absolute value to determine distances on the coordinate plane.

Key vocabulary:

  • absolute value
  • coordinate plane
  • quadrant

Special materials needed:

  • grid paper or coordinate plane paper
