Lesson objective: Use an area model to divide whole number dividends by a two-digit divisor.

This lesson helps to build the procedural skill of dividing whole numbers with a two-digit divisor using an area model. An area model is used here because it connects to prior experience with multiplication and prepares students for use of partial quotients. This work develops students' understanding that the dividend, divisor, and quotient relate to the parts of an area model.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 8 (look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning) as they connect principles of place value and operations to efficiently solve problems.

Key vocabulary:

  • area model
  • dividend
  • divisor
  • quotient
