Lesson objective: Apply an extended understanding of opposites as points reflected across the x or y axis.

This lesson provides an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and understanding of opposites to a mathematical situation. Students are asked to look at the layout of the "Coordinate-Your-Fun Fun Park" and relate locations found in it based on what their coordinates are, many of which are reflections.

Key Concept students will use: 

  • Reflected points share one common coordinate and one opposite coordinate.

Skills students will use:

  • Identifying coordinates of points reflected across the y-axis.
  • Identifying coordinates of points reflected across the x-axis.
  • Graphing rational numbers that are not whole numbers. 

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 7 (look for and make use of structure) as they apply their knowledge of coordinate pairs, how they relate to opposites and their position on the coordinate plane.
