Lesson objective: Interpret what the slope of a linear graph tells us about how two quantities change together.

This lesson helps to build procedural skill with interpreting the components of linear functions, namely slope. Graphs are the focus here so that students can visualize rate of change. This work develops students' understanding that the slope of a line gives us information about how the input and output values change together.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 2 (Reason abstractly and quantitatively) as they analyze the meaning of slope, and what it tells us about the relationship between two quantities.

Key vocabulary:

  • decreasing
  • increasing
  • rate of change
  • slope
