Lesson objective: Solve problems by using positional words to describe objects in our environment.

This lesson provides an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and understanding of positional words to a real-life situation. Students are asked to help with a game on their mother's cell phone by using positional words to move shapes.

Key Concept students will use: 

  • Use positional words to describe objects in our environment.

Skills students will use:

  • Understanding of the number of shapes is the same regardless of their arrangement (Grade 2, Unit 2).

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 3 (Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others) as they defend their choice of positional word to describe object location.

Special materials needed:

  • shape cards
  • arrows with positional words recorded them (consistent use of color is also suggested to support the needs of all learners (ie. blue arrow for above)
