Lesson objective: Solve problems demonstrating students' ability to sort and count objects using a ten frame as a tool for efficient counting.

This lesson provides an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and understanding of counting with objects and shapes. Students are asked to decide whether to sort by color or shape in order to answer the question of how many.

Key Concept students will use are sorting and counting to determine the number of objects in their enviroment and then transferring this to counting shapes.

Skills students will use:

  • Counting skills (Grade K, Unit 1 and 2)

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 1 (Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them) as they choose how to sort objects and shapes. Students use stategies of counters and drawing to support all stages of understanding as this practice provides opportunities for concrete to conceptual understanding. Students will use a ten frame as a tool to organize thinking. Students may use counters or drawings to represent thinking.

Key vocabulary:

  • count
  • group
  • sort
  • ten frame

Special materials needed:

  • counters or blocks (of any kind)
